Midcontinent Launches Latest Broadband Technology

SIOUX FALLS, SD - Midcontinent Communications has launched wideband Internet to the West Fargo and Sioux Falls service regions. The deployment of DOCSIS 3.0 (Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification) or D3, technology represents a landmark shift in Internet speeds to both residential and business consumers.
“It’s been our legacy to make sure that the latest and best technologies are available to our customers in the Northern Plains,” said Pat McAdaragh, Midcontinent’s President and CEO. “Launching D3 is just another example of our ongoing plan to bring advanced services like these not only to our larger cities, but also to the smaller communities that we serve.”

Midcontinent’s MidcoNet™ Ultimate speeds will allow up to 50 MB downloads and 5 MB uploads and customers at all service levels (residential and business) will see a speed increase. DOCSIS 3.0 allows for faster Internet speeds by bonding or combining several channels into a single connection. Previously, DOCSIS 3.0 services have been partially launched and then only in larger cities such as Minneapolis and New York.

“The Internet plays a key role in the way we work, live and play, and the launch of Midco D3 gives our customers the technology to gain the full advantage of that experience,” said Tom Simmons, Midcontinent’s Senior Vice President of Public Policy. “Whether it’s accessing video and music online, leveling the technology playing field for businesses or being a critical component of economic development, our investment in D3 brings our region to a level that is in the top tier in the nation.”

DOCSIS 3.0 technology is available with MidcoNet™ Ultimate (residential) and Advanced Package (business) service in:
• South Dakota - Sioux Falls, Baltic, Crooks, Renner, Canton, Madison, Colton, Humboldt, Tea and Harrisburg.
• North Dakota - Casselton, Reiles Acres, Oxbow, West Fargo, Frontier, Arthur, Buffalo, Harwood, Horace, Hunter, Leonard and Mapleton.
• Minnesota –Sabin.

Midcontinent will also be launching the new technology and faster speeds in Moorhead, Minnesota when Midcontinent services are available beginning this summer. Other service areas will deploy the new service throughout 2009-2010.

“Considering that residential and business bandwidth consumption has increased by 360% over the last five years, it’s critical that Internet service can not only deliver at current demand levels, but is also ready for a future that will see an even greater demand for rich media and applications that haven’t even been invented,” said Jon Pederson, Midcontinent’s Vice President of Technology. “We have built our new system to meet these needs seamlessly and around world-class technologies from companies like Cisco and Ubee.”

Those who would like to see the new speeds demonstrated are welcome to stop by Midcontinent’s Customer Service Centers in Sioux Falls (5111 South Louise) or Fargo (4950 13th Avenue South).
