On February 17, 2009, all over-the-air television broadcasting stations will transition to digital broadcasting as required by the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) and Congress. This is called the 2009 DTV Transition. Changing over to a digital format will reduce the amount of signal spectrum the nation's TV broadcasting system uses, allowing the extra capacity to be used by emergency first-responders, like our local fire and police departments. In addition, for the viewer, digital television (DTV) allows TV stations to offer clearer pictures and better sound quality.
