Game On

The Internet is like Wal-Mart. Everything you need in one shop - TV, phone (Skype), games, data, bills and movies.

I enjoy playing online games including World of Warcraft (WoW), Call of Duty (CoD), Fable 3, SC2 and Brink, basically anything you can name. I also watch Netflix and browse funny websites. More often than not, I am looking up how-to vids, walkthroughs or random information. For example last night while playing WoW, I was reading up on the true vision range of eyesight in humans measured in hertz and how it applies to monitors. Crazy!

Online applications keep me close to my family. My mother’s birthday was just a few weeks ago. I didn't manage to get her anything in time due to my work schedule being so hectic. Oops! So I decided to teach her how to download, install and use Skype. I sent her a video call, and she started screaming when she saw me. It was the first time she’d seen me in years, since I don't get to go home much. She told me it was the best part of her birthday, and it made me so happy to make her day.

Also, my dad has a business and with Windows VNC I am able to connect to his computer and configure his settings for his projector to help solve some of his technical problems from home. My brother and I also stay connected by playing games online.

On Demand is Amazing
Posted: 04/22/2012 2:57 PM (None Assigned)
On Demand? I remember that, isn’t it the feature where you call a phone number, select what movie you want to watch and see at what time it will play? Then you sit around and wait watching previews of movies you didn’t order and hope the channel kicks over in time for your movie? Then at five past the hour the channel finally switches over only for you to realize you missed a very integral part of the movie you were dying to see? ... Read More

Xstream is There for Every Mood
Posted: 03/05/2012 3:13 PM (None Assigned)
Wow, where to begin. There’s a lot to do online to combat boredom, but I guess it all depends on your mood. I’ll go through the list of things I did online during my recent mood changes. We’ll start with the more depressing moods and move up from there. Sad/Tired/Depressed: One night this week I was feeling all of these emotions. I wasn’t sure what to do in order to break out of this slump, then I remembered how m... Read More

Off to a Fresh Start
Posted: 02/24/2012 2:51 PM (None Assigned)
Forget the past. It’s time to push myself. After a recent run in with a wall (don’t try to fight them, you’ll always lose), I realized that I need to blow off steam in some better ways. So I think I am going to start hitting the gym. Now, this isn’t a one week resolution type of deal. I want to get my body in peak shape before I leave the Air Force. I want to take advantage of all the resources available to me. The p... Read More

Online Tools for Financial Success
Posted: 02/09/2012 10:36 AM (None Assigned)
I don't know if I have ever told you, but I really enjoy budgets and financing. I want to eventually go to school for either a CPA or MBA. I haven't yet decided. To put my budgeting skills into perspective, I owned a 2004 Corvette Z06 ($40,000) and a 1990 Corvette ($15,000) at the same time at the age of 22 on an E-3 in the Air Force's salary. From time to time, I will scout online resources to improve my budgeting tips and tricks. I recentl... Read More

An Xstream Game Plan
Posted: 02/02/2012 7:46 PM (None Assigned)
I just bought all new computer parts and am building a top end computer. Because of that, I'm writing from my phone for this post, so it might be a little bit short. During this Sunday’s big game, I will be sleeping and playing computer games. I'm not that into watching sports, as I prefer to be part of the action by playing them. If I did like watching sports, I will tell you what I would be excited for with the biggest football game o... Read More

Stop the Silence
Posted: 01/13/2012 8:15 AM (None Assigned)
Midcontinent challenged its Xstream Team members to go for one week without accessing the Internet. Keep reading to see how many days I lasted. Well, first off, I don’t think you can call this a challenge.  You may think I sound cocky here, but don’t get me wrong, it’s not because it was easy, it’s because of how little time I actually spent off the Internet.  I initially thought, well, this is going to be tou... Xstream Keeps My Home Office Buzzing
Posted: 12/29/2011 3:20 PM (None Assigned)
I asked my wife to share her thoughts about Xstream this week. Take a look at her review! Before our house had 100 Mbps, my husband and I were forced to operate only two Internet-related devices at once. We could both play games on our respective computers; however, latency was a problem and irritated me beyond belief. When my office declared they were downsizing and we had to all work from home, I was nervous because a home agent (as we are c... Read More

Thankfully, Some Things Get Cheaper Over Time
Posted: 12/12/2011 1:22 PM (None Assigned)
The one thing that has scaled as far as the Internet throughout time is a hard drive! Above is a picture of one of my external hard drives. Back in 1998, I bought my first 20 GB hard drive for $120. Today, I have a 1 TB and 2 TB external hard drive. Also, I have three 500 GB internal hard drives. If I paid today per gig, what I paid back then (6 bucks a gig) I’d be in the hole $27,000. That is just amazing to think about. I think t... Read More

An Xstream Copycat Chef
Posted: 11/03/2011 5:38 PM (None Assigned)
I am good at following directions, but being creative however is my flaw. I can come up with the simple ideas to surprise someone for an anniversary, birthday, etc., but pulling it off is a different story. I had this idea for a day long meal I wanted to make my wife that revolved around her favorite food: turkey. What the heck can I do with turkey? Well after some extensive research, I found meals I could make for breakfast lunch and dinner!&nbs... Read More

How the Web Saves My Day
Posted: 10/16/2011 6:42 PM (None Assigned)
Five websites that save me time and effort are… www.netflix.com I know, Netflix, obvious choice. But seriously, do you know how much gas costs? It’s stupid, and the time I save driving to and from the (now closed down) Hollywood Video more than pays for the subscription fee. Being able to watch movies without leaving my home is priceless.   www.newegg.com Think of an electronic part or device &ndas... Read More

It Connects Me

I would have to say that the recently constructed bridge over Broadway in Minot is a great landmark to compare to Midcontinent Xstream Wideband. Despite it not being the size of the Statue of Liberty, it will eventually see most of this city’s newly arriving feet. It was built to help the city’s new arrivals get from the Minot International Airport to the other side of Broadway where a hotel awaits them. Unlike most cities that hav... Read More

A Day in the Life: Devices that Shape My Day
Posted: 08/22/2011 2:48 PM (None Assigned)
Think you’re dependent on your Internet-connected devices? See how my devices keep me entertained throughout the day. Each morning, too early in the morning, my phone alarm goes off. Another day where work must be accomplished. I don’t want to go to work. It doesn’t have to be such a heavy burden now does it? Oh well, here I go.  At work my mind starts to wander. Where does it go? Not having much of an imagination, ... Read More

It’s a Bird…It’s a Plane…It’s Xstream

With MidcoNet Xstream® Wideband 3.0 there is no more waiting. Webpages load instantaneously. Checking bank drafts are a breeze, and downloading updates are over before you know they’ve started. Netflix streaming is always in HD, no more watching the first five minutes of a show all pixilated waiting for buffering.  Like listening to XM/Sirius radio? So do I, but now I do it without the inconsistencies of the audio play-rate d... Read More

Forgive & Forget
Posted: 07/25/2011 12:01 PM (None Assigned)
When I first started using the Internet, way back in the 90s, I hated the five minute wait to establish a connection followed by that horrid dial up sound. You remember the one. Once that sound started, my head would immediately come crashing down onto my keyboard. My mind would drift thinking about the days when I would be connected to the interwebs instantly and not have to use AOL.com or browse for config files to reduce the amount of ads on t... Read More
